13 people were killed as a result of clashes between police and gangs during an operation to arrest a gang leader in the coastal area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to the police, the raid was carried out on a tip-off about the presence of the most wanted gang leader Leonardo Costa in the area. Helicopters and armored vehicles were also used in the operation.
The police say that 13 people were killed as a result of the clash between the gang and the police during the raid, almost all of the dead were suspected criminals, while the gang involved in the killing of several police officers and drug trade in the northern state of Para during the clash. Leader Leonardo Costa is also dead.
According to the police, civilians were also injured in the exchange of fire during the encounter.
