According to Indian media, Geeta Sharma, the mother of the woman who died of burns, gave a statement in the court that at the time of marriage, former firefighter Lakhan had demanded one lakh Indian rupees in the name of dowry, which she could not give.

Geeta Sharma, in her statement, further stated that her daughter was physically and mentally abused by Lakhan and in October 2017, Lakhan set her daughter on fire by throwing a thunderbolt, which led to her death.

On being found guilty, the court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs.7000.
