U.S. officials say Bilal al-Sudani, a key leader of ISIS in Somalia, was killed during a military operation authorized by President Biden.
US troops went to a cave in the mountains of northern Somalia to arrest the ISIS leader.
Bilal Al-Sudani along with 10 of his companions were killed in the firing.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that on January 25, the US military conducted an operation in northern Somalia after receiving an order from the president.
He said that as a result of the operation, several Daesh fighters including Bilal al-Sudani were killed.
The defense secretary said Bilal was responsible for ISIS’s growing presence in Africa and providing significant support to the organization’s operations around the world, including in Afghanistan.
From this mountain bunker in Somalia, ISIS leader provided resources not only for Africa but also for ISIS Khorasan.
